My single-minded concern is for the freedom and welfare of my countrymen and my posterity, the freedom of all men.

Someone asked me once how I felt about amnesty for the draft card burner and the deserter. I told him that I thought every one of them should be taken before General Moroni to be judged. We need to feel again what it means to be a citizen of the United States of America. We need to feel the thrill and sensation and have the swellings within our bosom about this country. The priesthood of God should be an example of patriotism and loyalty to our country. As I talk about the United States of America, each one should consider his homeland, his flag, and his country.

I think it is time we should all awaken. Our concern isnt about the flames of freedom which burn so brightly in our generation; the concern is that in the upcoming generation the fire has never been kindled. Our youth have never known anything but criticism of the United States of America. We need some faithful, free-loving patriots who will issue forth a clear, loud trumpet call. Remember Pauls counsel: For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare ... to the battle? (1 Cor. 14:8.) Freedom ought to ring in the heart of every Latter-day Saint regardless of his country.

Patrick Henry, a great American patriot, said:
I have now disposed of all my property to my family. There is one thing more I wish I could give them, and that is the Christian religion. If they had that, and I had not given them one shilling they would have been rich, and if they had not that, and I had given them all the world, they would be poor.

Courage, honesty, loyalty, patriotism, law and orderthese and other elements of the divine nature are no longer revered as virtues.

If America is destroyed, it may be by Americans who salute the flag, sing the national anthem, march in patriotic parades, cheer Fourth of July speakersnormally good Americans, but Americans who fail to comprehend what is required to keep our country strong and freeAmericans who have been lulled away into a false security.

Gradual encroachments
The facts are clear. Our problem centers in Washington, D.C. And this applies to the administration of both political parties. In the words of James Madison, Since the general civilization of mankind, I believe there are more instances of the abridgment of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power, than by violent and sudden usurpations. (Elliots Debates, Vol. 3, p. 87.)
If America is to withstand these influences and trends, there must be a renewal of the spirit of our forefathers, an appreciation of the American way of life, a strengthening of muscle and sinew and the character of the nation. America needs guts as well as guns. National character is the core of national defense.

Appreciation for American system
Could many of our ills today have resulted from our failure to train a strong citizenry from the only source we havethe boys and girls of each community? Have they grown up to believe in politics without principle, pleasure without conscience, knowledge without effort, wealth without work, business without morality, science without humanity, worship without sacrifice?

Topics: Education
We can never survive unless our young people understand and appreciate our American system, which has given more of the good things of life than any other system in the worldunless they have a dedication that exceeds the dedication of the enemy. Character must become important in this country again. The old essentials of honesty, self-respect, loyalty, and support for law and order must be taught the younger generation.
